James Foley, Last Hot Springs Civil War Veteran, Dies

Hot Springs, June 11 - James Foley, 95, the last Civil war veteran of Hot Springs, died this morning at the Soldier's home, where he had lived since 1919.

He was feted last May 12 on the occasion of his 93th birthday, when he declared, "I've had a nice time all my life and I have no kick coming."

Foley was born in Webster county. New York. May 12, 1845, and enlisted in the Union army at Omaha Oct. 23, 1862, serving with Company B of the Second Nebraska cavalry, which was stationed in the Indian country during the war. Foley considered himself lucky that he didn't serve on the battlefields where the blue and gray clashed. He was 17 years old when he enlisted.

He was discharged at Omaha Sept. 4, 1863.

Some years after the war, he moved near Edgemont where he homesteaded for six years. Afterwards he and his wife, who died many years ago, traveled extensively throughout the United States.

He was one of several South Dakota Civil war veterans who attended the final reunion of the blue and gray at Gettysburg, Pa., on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1938.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. R. M. Bradley, Fayetteville, Ark., and Edith A. Garrett, Medford, Ore., who attended his 95th birthday party. Funeral services have been set.
