She was born Bessie Lou Jackson, the daughter of Ludia Walter Jackson and Ethel Hibler from Ellis County, Texas. Her parents separated when her mother was pregnant. Her mother married a second time to Glenn William Phinney when Bessie was quite young and she assumed Glenn was her father. Her mother never told her any different. At school, she always used the last name of Phinney instead of Jackson.
Glenn died from a freak accident when she was 14. Sometime after that, she was going through the family Bible and saw Ludia Walter Jackson listed as your father and not Glenn Phinney. Her mother's lie really messed her up. Her real father was a good man, but she never lived close to him to visit with him regularly.
When she left home she changed her name to Betty Lou instead of Bessie. Although she may not have legally changed it. She married Marshall Anders and had a son. They divorced and she married a Mr. Martin. They divorced. She died in El Paso where her son was living.
