Elijah Beardsley Phelps was born on the 21st of July in 1799 in New Milford, Connecticut. His parents were William Rathbun and Tamer Candied Phelps. He moved to Fishkill, New York to teach school. On 30th of December 1821, in Canaan, Ct. Elijah married his student Wealthy Melinda Lawrence, shortly after their marriage Wealthy died on 25 June 1824 seven months after the birth of their daughter Sarah who was born on the 1 August 1823. There were two children Elijah and Sarah of this marriage.

Later Elijah married a student Jane Elizabeth Wright, she was born on 30th of April 1809 in Fishkill, New York, she was the mother of thirteen children, according to the Register General of the D.A.R. states that there isn't any proven proof that Elijah and Jane were married. There is proof of their marriage through a family Bible which recorded the event.
