The son of James M. and Eliza (McCoy or McKay) James, Samuel was first married 7 Jan 1896 in Richland County, IL to Armilda J. (Parr) Cummins. They had at least two children:
Minnie Belle (1898-1918)
Arie Clementine (1902-1918)

Florida's 1935 State Census shows S. P. James, Merchant, age 65, born in Illinois, wife Ruth, age 32, and daughter Mildred, age 11. Other sources indicate that Ruth was previously married to Roy Boyce. They had a daughter Mildred Dolores Boyce.

In 1940 Samuel, Ruth, and Mildred are living in Live Oak, FL with Samuel's brother Russell James.

Florida's 1945 State Census shows Samuel, retired, and Ellen living in Alachua County, FL.
