Richard was born in Eau Claire, Wis., March 5, 1930, to Caryl and Erick Alf. Richard married Marion Holmes in 1949, and they celebrated 66 years together, before her passing in November 2015.

Photography had been his vocation since high school. He began his career as a photography apprentice in Topeka, Kan., and later taught at the Air Force School of Photography in Denver. In 1956, he moved to Winona, to manage Edstrom Studio, which he purchased in 1962, and renamed Alf Photography. Richard received his Master-Craftsman degree from the Professional Photographers of America, and served as president of the Minnesota Professional Photographers Association.

Richard was a veteran and he proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force with duty in Korea, in 1953-1954.

After moving to California, he joined Gideon's International and volunteered as a chaplain in the Orange County California Jail Ministries. His hobbies included sailing, golfing, teaching Bible studies, and taking trips with Marion, in their various motor homes. He was a gentle man, always dignified and respectful. He lived to serve God, his family and others.
