Elizabeth was the oldest child of Philip Barton Key and Ellen Swan Key; granddaughter of Francis Scott Key; wife of Robert A. Dobbin Sr; and mother of George Dobbin Sr, Robert Dobbin Jr and Mrs Frederick Howland of Providence, RI.

The family of Philip and Ellen Key lived in Baltimore, where her Philip was a lawyer. He was appointed as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia when Elizabeth was seven years old. In March 1855, Elizabeth's mother died, 12 days after giving birth to her fourth child, Alice Lloyd Key.

In about 1870, Elizabeth married Robert Archibald Dobbin.

Mrs Dobbin died at her home, 121 West Fayette Avenue on October 4, 1908. She was a member of one of the most prominent families in Maryland. Funeral services took place at Grace Protestant Episcopal Church, conducted by Rev Dr Arthur Chilton Powell, rector.
