Mortally wounded in the left knee at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas.
Buried as an unknown soldier.
Letter to the Independent Newspaper (Oskaloosa, KS), written by John C. Burnett while in the hospital following the Battle of Prairie Grove, dated January 20, 1863:
"...I was wounded in the left knee during the engagement. If I have good luck, I think it will get well without a stiff joint. Two or three very small pieces of bone have been taken out. I am getting considerably tired of the hospital, though I think myself fortunate when I take into consideration some that are here, who will do well of they get out alive..."
