Plainview, Nov. 14 (Special) - Funeral services for J. E. Deen, a Tulia resident since 1918 will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Tulia First Baptist Church.
Mr. Deen, 68, died Thursday afternoon. He suffered a heart attack Sunday. Dr. W. Neil Renayrd, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery at Tulia under direction of Wallace Funeral Home. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted.
Mr. Deen was born June 27, 1890, in Kaufman County, Texas. A veteran of World War I, he came to Tulia in 1918 immediately after his discharge from service and had made his home there since. Deen has been an outstanding figure in veteran organizations and in Masonic work. He was past district commander of the VFW and also held other offices at the state and national level. He was a member of Tulia VFW, American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Blue Lodge and chapter and council lodge.
He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of El Paso, Knights Templar of Plainview and Rhiva Shrine, Amarillo. The Plainview KT Commandery will escort the funeral procession.
Deen was county clerk of Swisher County from 1938 till 1945. Survivors included a brother, C. C. Deen of Tulia and a sister, Mrs. T. P. Starnes, also of Tulia. (Source: Newspaper unknown, dated Nov. 14, 1958; Texas Genealogy Trails
