Ralph L. Slate, aged 89, passed away on Nov 16, 2020, in Austin, TX. He was born in Lindsay, OK on September 15, 1931.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held on Nov 21, 2020, at 10:00 AM at Unity Baptist Church, 1725 West Chisholm Drive, Duncan, OK, with Bro. Dan Standifer officiating, assisted by Bro. David McAllister. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date and he will be interred next to his oldest son, Richard Lynn Slate, at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Comanche, OK.

Ralph was a 1951 graduate of Washington High School, Washington, OK. He was a talented baseball player and immediately out of high school entertained plans to play professional baseball even attending tryouts with the then, Philadelphia Athletics and Connie Mack. He was assigned to a Class D semi-pro baseball team in Hugo, OK. Ralph met the love of his life, Janice L. Motsenbocker, in 1950 and they were married on December 28, 1951. To this union, four children were born: Richard, Stephen, Dana, and Dennis.

He briefly attended the University of Oklahoma in the fall of 1951, but his studies were interrupted by the Korean War. Upon commencement of the war he was called to active duty in the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1951-1953 and in the U.S. Air National Guard until 1954. Upon release from active duty in 1953, he moved with his wife to Clute, Texas, where he worked for Dow Chemical for 2 years before returning to the University of Oklahoma to complete his studies. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Oklahoma in 1958.

Upon graduation from college Ralph accepted a position as a staff chemist with Halliburton Oil Company of Duncan, OK, where he remained for 34 years retiring as a senior analytical research chemist. Once Ralph retired, he continued to garden, hunt quail, watch OU football, and fill in as a pastor wherever needed. He pastored Baptist churches in Fort Cobb, OK; Comanche, OK; Henrietta, TX; and Ratliff City, OK. He was a member and served as an associate pastor of Unity Missionary Baptist Church during the 1960’s to the 1980’s.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 69 years, Janice; son, Dr. Dennis Slate and wife Denise of Conroe, TX; Stephen Slate and wife Debbie of Noble, OK; and daughter Dana and husband Kenny Brown, of Georgetown, TX. Ralph had five grandchildren, John Slate, LeAnn French, Jarod Slate, Andrea Slate, and Caleb Brown. He had seven great-grandchildren. Ralph has two of six siblings alive at the time of his death: Elon Shuttleworth of TX and Mel Slate of OK.

Ralph was preceded in death by one son, Richard L. Slate of CA, and a great granddaughter, Letha Slate. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nellie and Marion Basil Slate, along with his brothers, Gerald and Beral, and a sister, Faye.
