DR. E. A. SMITH, CITY'S OLDEST PHYSICIAN, DIES
Practitioner Who Outlived Predictions of Specialists . Twelve Years Succumbs in 71st Year.
Dr. Ellis A. Smith, Sunbury's oldest physician, was dead today, twelve years after his case had been given up as hopeless by Philadelphia specialists and he had been advised to return home and "set his house in order" in preparation for death. He was suffering from a heart ailment.
The veteran physician, a man of strong will power and unflagging determination, made a remarkable comeback. He insisted upon continuing his practice, being driven about in his car to perform his professional duties. Meanwhile by careful application, he regained his health and remained active in his professional work until recent months. He had been stricken ill several months ago, and following a relapse, his condition became steadily worse. Death occurred at 10:4:5 o'clock this morning.
Dr. Smith, during the twelve year period since he was told that he had but a short time to live, achieved the greatest success of his career. He handled a large and practice and accumulated considerable real estate in Sunbury and Northumberland, along with other equity.
He had the reputation of being a hard working and conscientious physician and was considered the best "bone-setter" in Sunbury by his associates. He devoted his entire time to his practice and his home. A man of retiring nature, he was held in universal esteem. Born at Turbotville January 26, 1868, the son of George W. and Emily Fowler Smith, he was in his 71st year. He was graduated from Baltimore medical college in 1891 and took a post graduate course at Jefferson Medical College. He had been engaged in practice here since 1906.
Dr. Smith was a member of Zion Lutheran church,- and was affiliated with the Modern Woodmen of the World, and F. O aagies. Surviving are his wife, Jennie A.. Smith, and a daughter, Mrs. Grace S. Goodyear, wife of J. F. txooayear Sunbury; two grand4 wuiuien, JacK a. smith and Grace Anna" Smith, Shamokin Dam children of the late Andrew Smith two sister, Mrs. W. H. Schuyler of Kitanning and Mrs. Grace S. Derr Harrisburg. , Funeral services will be held at Uie late home at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon with Dr. Charles foelsch officiating. Burial will be in West Side cemetery. The body may be viewed from one o'clock Sunday afternoon until the time of the funeral at the home.
