She went to country school through the eighth grade, then spent one year in Holt High School so she could attend confirmation. After that she went to the AC (agriculture school) in Crookston, Minnesota, graduating in 1940. After school she had several jobs including housekeeping in Duluth, working in the turkey plant in Thief River Falls, and custom sewing.
She was married to Marvin Walter Johnson on October 13, 1948 in Holt. Together they farmed the family farm in Badger Township near Erskine. She spent many years milking cows and raising her birds. She always had chickens and geese, with ducks, guinea hens, peacocks and partridge thrown in at times. She also enjoyed making donuts and cookies for people, gardening and going out with her two special friends, Susan and Rosie. She loved to have family gatherings, and to go on road trips with family members.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine, as well as being an active member of Grace Ladies Aid and the Mary Circle. She also taught Sunday School for many years at Gosen Church. She went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at the age of 97 years and 5 months.
Evelyn is survived by her brothers: Clifford Steinhauer and Donald (Sandra) Steinhauer; daughters: Emily (David) Johnson, Elaine (Merlyn) Alme, and Josephine (Val) Carver; grandchildren: Nathaniel (Katie) Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, Mark (Jane) Johnson, Andrew (Samantha)Alme, Sarah (Aron) Muetzel, Joel (Leah) Carver, and Rachael (David) Kimsey; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, in October of 1988; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marjorie Steinhauer, Truman and Dorothy Johnson, Roy and Gertrude Johnson, and Allen and Agnes Hovland; niece, Susie Hovland, and nephews: Joe Steinhauer and Dave Johnson.
Interment will be in First English Cemetery, rural Mentor.
