Jan was born on September 24, 1945 in Anderson, Indiana to Frank Gray and Frances McKeand Hoppes. In addition to her "daddy" Frank, Jan was fortunate enough to gain a bonus father figure in the form of her loving dad, Bobby Hoppes.
Jan grew up in Anderson, Indiana, where she attended Anderson High School. In her youth, she was an avid skater. She worked so diligently at her craft; she won a roller-skating state championship. It was during this period that she met her life-long love, Chuck. Jan and Chuck spent their early days dancing at The Indian Room and The Elks. They eventually married on April 2, 1961 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Anderson. They were happily married for 59 years.
Jan and Chuck spent the early part of their marriage raising and providing for their young family. In 1981, through much encouragement from Jan, she and Chuck decided to take a leap of faith and start their own lawn equipment business in Anderson. Through hard work and dedication, the couple grew Bendle Lawn Equipment into a thriving business and family legacy. One of Jan's greatest joys was working alongside her family each day.
Jan's most treasured times were spent with her family. She never missed an opportunity to support her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She lived for the holidays and her ability to make each occasion larger than life was second to none. Jan spent much of her free time traveling far and wide with her best friend, Chuck. Later in life, Jan and Chuck enjoyed spending their winters with their daughter and son-in-law in Rockledge, Florida. In the summer, they spent their days at "The Farm" in southern Indiana. Being outside filled Jan with such joy and The Farm provided her with endless opportunities to practice some of her favorite outdoor pastimes. She loved to spend her time at The Farm, bird watching, walking and riding the trails with Chuck and tending to her always beautiful abundance of flowers.
Jan will be greatly missed by her family and loved ones. She will be remembered most for her sense of adventure, her hard-working spirit, her kind heart, her generosity, her selflessness and most of all, her dedication and love for her family.
Jan was preceded in death by her daddy, Frank Gray, her mother and dad, Frances and Bobby Hoppes and her brothers, Mike, Denny and Steve Gray.
She is survived by her husband, Chuck; her son, Dean (Laura) Riddle, her daughter, Lisa (Steven) Englert; her sisters, Karen Gray and Cindy Biven, her brother, Rick (Susie) Biven; her grandchildren, Apryl (Nick) Freesland, Ty Riddle, Liz (Brad) Robinson and Hannah (David) Clark; her great-grandchildren, Quinlynn, Jaydelyn, Jovie and Ella and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
