When Marie's youngest sister Elsie Pearl was born on July 11, 1908 at Hibbing, St Louis, Minnesota, her mother, Lillian Belle died six days later on July 17, 1908 from childbirth complications. Marie and older sister Effie were sent to live with an uncle and aunt, Frank and Nancy Auringer, and the baby Elsie was sent to an orphanage where she died at age 9 months.
