Bertie was the ninth of ten children born to William Gabriel and Rachel Ann (Brooke) Michael. According to his death notice, his age was two years, three months and seven days. He was predeceased by two older sisters: first-born Martha "Addie" at age 14 (1870-1884) and second-born Mary Louisa, who died on the day she was born (12 June 1872). Sadly, yet another of Bertie's older sisters, fourth-born Jennette Ann "Nettie", died only a month after him on 11 October at age 14.
