Elmer Ferdinand Hart was born on March 25, 1893 at home near Chandler, MN to Fred and Anna Johnson Hart. He grew up on the family farm and attended Country School District #60 near Chandler. He farmed with his brother Ed until he was drafted into the US Army in June 1918. He served in France during WWI. After his discharge, he returned to the family farm. On August 1, 1923, he and Isabel May Vogt were married in Minneapolis, MN. Following their marriage they farmed part of the Hart family homestead and raised their five children there, spending many happy years together. Isabel died on February 8, 1975 and Elmer continued living on the farm and helped his son, Elmer Jr.. He never retired from farming, just slowed down but was still active at the time of his death on April 14, 1990. He passed away at his home at the age of 97. Elmer was a member of the Iona Presbyterian Church for most of his life and had served as an elder and usher. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, had been the Fenton Twp. treasurer for many years, served on the school board District #60 for many years and had received his fifty year pin from the Chandler American Legion. Farming was Elmer's life. He also enjoyed gardening, reading and writing letters to friends and relatives.
Survivors include five children and their spouses, Virginia and Arthur Anderson of Bemidji, MN; Elmer Jr. and Madelia of Chandler, MN; Ted and Lorena of Chandler, MN; Robert and Janice of Casselton, ND; and Alwyn and Sharon of Marshall, MN. He was blessed with 16 grandchildren 16 great-grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren and 4 step great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Fred of Chandler, MN, Clarence of Bemidji, MN, and Lawrence of Slayton, MN. He is preceded in death by his wife, Isabel, sisters, Helen, Edna and Bessie, and brother, Edwin.
