Word was received in the city this morning of the death of Daniel Baker of Alda, an old resident of this county and one of the oldest in that section. He was the father of the former Mrs. Judy at whose home he died, and of Mrs. H. N. Lord, formerly of Doniphan.

An Old Settler

In the death of Daniel Baker of Alda there passed another of the old settlers of this county. While not of the first settlers of the county Mr. Baker was one of the first, and particularly one of the first of his section. He located here in 1860 in what is now Wood River township. He was born in 1879 (sic) and came to this county from Switzerland in 1847. He conducted a livery business for some time in the east and later did freighting in Nebraska in the early days, finally in 1860 locating here. He was married in this county in 1864 to Mrs. Fry, widow of Chas. Fry who was killed in the civil war and the daughter of Joseph and Ellen Smith. Mrs. Baker's father and two brothers were killed by Indians in 1862. Mr. Baker was in the time of his activity an enterprising and influential citizen always, and very active in political affairs.

The funeral of Daniel Baker an old resident of this county took place yesterday afternoon from the Methodist church at Alda. The funeral was largely attended as the deceased was largely known and well respected throughout the community.

Daniel Baker, an old and respected resident of this community, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Annie Frey, Saturday morning. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. J. Cocking. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to the cemetery where they were laid to rest. He leaves a number of relatives in this community to mourn his loss who have the sympathy of the entire community.
