It was written shortly before William's death in 1875 and published in the Lewistown Gazette. It is rambling and sometimes hard to follow but I thought you might find it interesting. I have copied it exactly as I found it; however I have numbered the children to make it easier to follow.
" My grandfather, John Mitchell , came to Philadelphia long before the Revolutionary War. He married a lady named Jane Ross, the only daughter of Lord John Ross who was very wealthy. Her father was bitterly opposed to the marriage and they had to flee the country. (Ireland) The father then offered one hundred pounds, under the Old English law for his head, dead or alive. In the course of time the father became reconciled to the marriage and went up from Philadelphia to Carlisle and owned them as his children. John Ross died in Philadelphia, date unknown to us.
John Mitchell had eight children, three boys and five girls.
(1) James, the eldest , married Mary Steel; they had two daughters and one son. They lived in Greencastle, Pa, where James died August 8, 1870.
(2) Elizabeth married Thomas Holt.
(3)Eleanor married Henry Cunningham.
(4) John Ross married Mary West. They had one daughter, Mary. John Ross then married Isabella Blair, daughter of a preacher. Their two sons, James and William moved to Brownsville; a daughter Eleanor, born January 26, 1781 married Robert Irvin, December 19, 1811; Eleanor died August 29, 1854. Her husband Robert Irvin was born September 21 1781 and died August 22 1864. Rebecca born 1787, married Nathaniel Weakley on December 9, 1815, she died ten days later. Ross, James and William, sons of whom we know nothing.
Isabella died November 15 , 1811 and John Ross died in 1802, at the same place where his father died, one mile north of Carlisle at the Big Limestone Spring. Another daughter is said to have married a man named Miller. This might have been the daughter of the first marriage to Mary West.
(5) Ann Agnes married Thomas Alexander.
(6) William 1756-1822, married Elizabeth Hamilton on March 23 1780; He died March 8, 1822; She died April 9, 1827, in Clarion county. In 1777 he went down to Brandywine to haul the baggage wagons and was in that battle, serving under Capt. Walter Stewart, 2nd Pa. Regiment, and in 1778 was transferred to Capt. Jacob Ashmead's Co., same Regiment, as drummer. He served 2 years; was paid off in Continental money, fetched it home and bought a farm near Lancaster or New Lancaster . He married near Red Rock Church in Sherman's Valley. In 1766 his father John traded the horses he rode over the mountain into Dry valley, looking for land, to a man named Baird for his claim to several hundred acres of land.
In 1781 William sold his farm he bought with his war pay to a man named Davis, and in 1784 he, his wife, and two children, on horseback came over the mountain to settle upon the farm his father had traded his horses for. William Mitchell's body was buried in the Methodist Church yard at Kelly and on the headstone: " A Soldier of the Revolution."

(6) Nancy Agnes was born September 25 1792 and married Edward Williams on August 23 1810.
(7) James born on July 7, 1795 died in October 1845. He married Abbie Hockenbury.
