He was mustered in as a 2nd Lieutenant of Company G, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 13, 1862, but was advanced to 1st Lieutenant and regimental Quartermaster three days later. He served in this capacity for the regiment through it's term of service as it saw action in the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863. A few months later he was appointed as the regimental Quartermaster of the newly-raised 34th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, being mustered in on October 9, 1863. He served until he resigned on January 14, 1865.
After the war he was a grocer, and served as Postmaster for his hometown of Beverly, New Jersey.
