Fredrick William "Fred" Ihms was born on October 29, 1900, to Christ and Bertha Ihms of Elkhorn, Iowa. His parents divorced shortly after his birth, and his mother married Albert Christian Woldt in 1905. He grew up with one sister and three half-siblings from the second marriage. He moved to Long Beach California in 1944 and worked in construction until his retirement in 1968. He died unexpectedly in 1973 at the age of 72.
