He was the son of the emigrant from Coleraine, N. Ireland John Peterson. He owned a farm near the (former) Standish Cemetery in Duxbury.
On 9 February 1689/9 he married Hannah, daughter of Dea. John and Abigail (Andrews) Wadsworth.
