Conduct Rites For Longtime Resident

Lena Hirschi Smith, 92, a resident of Montpelier for nearly 70 years, died June 25 in the LDS Nursing Home at Idaho Falls. She was born in Diemtigen, Switzerland, October 18, 1877, a daughter of Christian and Magdalena Von Allmen Hirschi. The family moved to Pulsitz, Germany in 1882 and in 1891 came to the United States, making their home first in Paris, Idaho and later at Geneva.
She and George Smith were married May 13, 1901 and made their home in Montpelier. Mr. Smith died in 1923. She was also preceded in death by two of six sons born to the union. Mrs. Smith was a member of the LDS Church.
Surviving are sons, Clifford H. Smith of Pocatello, Delbert E. Smith of Salt Lake City, Elmer T. Smith and Vernon H. Smith, both of Montpelier; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Widmer of Geneva, two brothers, Fred Hirschi of Salt Lake City and Christian Hirschi, Jr., of Ogden, nine grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Services were a 1 p.m., Monday in the Montpelier LDS Third-Fifth Ward Chapel with Bishop Earl Wilcox of the Fifth Ward conducting. Prelude and postlude were played by Mrs. DuWayne Arnell and Fenton Allred offered the invocation. The opening song, a medley of hymns, was by a quartet comprised of Dr. Paul Daines, Philip Hulme, James Olsen and John Taggart, obituary and tribute, Mrs. G. W. Irving; vocal solo, “The Lord’s Prayer,” Mrs. Waldo Andersen with Mrs. Philip Hulme, as accompanist; speaker, Bishop Roscoe Evans; quartet, and benediction Bishop Wilcox. Prayer at Matthews Mortuary was by Merle Widmer.
Ray Peterson, Roger Smith, Jex Rowland, Evan Kunz, Clyde Whitman and Ivan Kunz were pallbearers, and Craig Sower, Royal Clark, Arthur Van Orman and Lawrence Roberts, honorary pallbearers.
Interment was in the Montpelier cemetery and Christian Hirschi gave the dedicatory prayer.
