The oldest grandchild of Martha Isabelle and George Washington Winberg, Bubba grew up in Beaumont, Texas with his mother and father along with his baby sister, Virginia Faye "Winberg" Bean. He served in the Navy, Pacific Theater during World War II on board a mine sweeper. After the war he became interested in motorcycles, began racing for Harley- Davidson and went on to be Five Mile Oval Track National Champion in 1955 and again in 1956. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Columbus, Ohio in 1998, the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Sturgis, South Dakota in 2015 and the Motorsport Hall of Fame in Daytona Beach, Florida in 2016.
