William enlisted as a Pvt. in the Confederate Army, Co. H., 10th Regt. of Virginia Volunteers on June 14, 1861 for a period of 1 year. His July-Aug. 1861 muster roll indicates that he was sick in his tent. He was discharged with a certificate of disability at Fairfax Station, Va., on Sept. 13, 1861.
His discharge paper describes him as 23 years old, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair and a farmer by trade. His final pay was $8.66 and was pro-rated from the base pay of $11.00 per month.
He married Nancy Deane Knight on 11/12/1868 in Greene County, Va.
1880 Census lists his name as Dunevan. CSA records list name as Donivan, marriage records list name as Dunnivant. Death certificate lists name as Donovan.
