Glenn Cappel, Native of Marksville, Passes Away In New Orleans
News of the death of C. Glenn Cappel of New Orleans was received here with regret. He was a native of Marksville, the son of the late Cliffe C. and Bena Brooks Cappel, members of prominent and pioneer families of the state.
Mr. Cappel died Friday, Dec. 5, at the Baptist Hospital, New Orleans. He was a member of the W. Horace Williams Company and was active in civil engineering circles. He wrote many technical publications, and in 1945 was awarded the American Society of Civil Engineers construction engineering prize. He served as president of the Louisiana section of the ASCE and also as a national director, from 1948-1950.
He was a graduate of Louisians State University and took post- graduate work at Renssalaer Institute. During World War II, he was in charge of construction of army and navy projects, including Camp Claiborne and Camp Polk in the central part of the state.
Other than his affiliation with engineering societies, he belonged to International House and the Metairie Country Club.
Finerall services were held Saturday, Dec. 6, from the House of Bultman, followed by interment in Hope Mausoleum.
He is survived by his widow, the former Julia Pumphrey; a son, Roy G. Cappel; a daughter, Miss Bena Lea Cappel; and a brother, Frank B. Chapel, Lacombe, La.
Marksville relatives and friends condole with the bereaved family.
The Cappel family made their home here for many years. It is recalled that Mr. Cliffe C. Cappel, a prominent lawyer of our town, built the home, now occupied by the Van Roy family, in 1898. Later the property was sold to Mr. Sheldon Coco, father of Mr. Ernest Coco of Marksville. The Cappels then built a home on South Washington street at the corner of Soule street. Today, that dwelling is the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Normand. For many years it was the property of the late Ulric F. Neck.
During the years that the Cappel family resided in Marksville, both Mr. And Mrs. Cappel and their sons, Frank and Glenn, were active in the professional, civic and social life of this section of the state. The late Calvin Cappel, a resident of Marksville for many years, was a brother of the late Cliffe Cappel. Among near relatives of Glenn Cappel now residing in Marksville are Mrs. Curtis C. Roy, Mrs. Samuel Moreau, and Miss Genie Simmons.
