MEDFORD Helen Mary Mathey, 96, died at 10:55 p.m. Saturday at Dunn County Health Care Center, Menomonie. She had resided there for the past 7 1/2 years. Services were today at Community United Church of Christ, Medford, with the Rev. Stephen Rohloff officiating. Burial was in Medford Evergreen Cemetery. Hemer Funeral Home, Medford, was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Larry Thomas, Ray Mathey, Tom, Jim, and Mike Levenhagen, Paul Thomas, and Mike Diesing. She was born Sept. 24, 1892, in Bismer, Mich., to Frank and Mary Schlais. She attended the Medford area schools, and was a 1913 graduate of Medford Senior High School. She was married to Charles Anton Mathey Oct. 5, 1922, in Portage. He died July 7, 1953. She was raised in the Gad area, Taylor County. Prior to her marriage, she taught in rural schools for nine years. After her marriage, she and her husband farmed in the town of Browning for a period of years until after her husband's death. She was a member of Community United Church of Christ, Medford, the G.U.G., and a charter member of the Taylor County Homemak-ers. She was a Taylor County 4-H leader for 15 years. She is survived by two sons, Eugene C. of Westboro and Charles R. of Woodstock, El.; three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Ruth) Thomas of Menomonie, Mrs. Nick (Alice) Levenhagen of Mequon, and Mrs. Gary, (Fern) Schlais of Palatine, El.; three step-children, Dolores Linzner of Fairbanks, Alaska, Bertha Garland of Menomonee ' Falls, and Alex Mathey of Clam Lake; one brother, Dean' Schlais of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Nicholes of Madison; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
