Named after her Aunt, Zelma Hughes (Kennedy), Aunt Lillian was not fond of the name, refused to be called Zelma, and rarely used the name when it could be avoided. She celebrated her birthday on July 22 rather than July 21 because she said the date on her birth certificate was incorrect.
My aunt moved to Lexington, KY in April of 1924 with her mother, Birdie Agnes Lucas Hughes, and brothers, William (Bill) Lee Hughes and Dorman Dee Hughes, and her sister, Anna Mae Hughes (Fryer), to the home of Cora Cummins Lucas and Mary Belle Davis(Cummins Haley)(maternal grandmother and great-grandmother) on Magoffin Street.
She left school at 1929 to marry her first husband, Frank Barnhill. They were divorced in the mid forties.
Aunt Lillian was employed by Brown's Booterie on Main Street in Lexington, KY. Then in the late forties she met her second husband, Robert Crowe, while she was working at Walgreen's Drugs on Main Street in Lexington, KY. They were married January 21, 1950 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The two were inseparable until he passed away April 24, 1980.
Ms. Crowe never had any children, but she was like a second mother to me and my brother all our lives.
In her mid fifties, my aunt suffered her first heart attack of three. She passed away September 07, 1993 at the age of 79 from complications from her heart condition.
My special THANKS to Julie for sponsoring this page under special circumstances. I am so grateful for her kindness and my aunt is so lucky to have her memorial sponsored by someone like Julie.
