As an avid historian committed to familial and local genealogical endeavors, she was co-founder of the Gen. Edmund Winchester Rucker Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a member of multiple preservation organizations such as the Pea River Historical Society. Authoring and co-authoring numerous books, she spent countless hours researching public records and exploring cemeteries. A love of quilting led her to co-found the Enterprising Quilters Guild as she hand sewed hundreds of quilts and crafted many heirlooms that continue to be treasured by family. Ms. Helms was employed as a civil servant accountant for many years at Fort Rucker and was a dedicated charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
