She was united in marriage to Donie Bales on July 12, 1958 in Alton, MO. Vergie spent her married life as a homemaker and a dedicated wife, supporting Don's accomplished Army career, and later, his career at Carter Funeral Home.
After Don's death, Vergie spent most of her time with her sister Edith, going wherever their car would take them for the day. It was never a surprise to see Edith's car in your driveway with Vergie in the passenger seat. Aunt Vergie loved her family, loving her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children. We will forever giggle at the thought of Aunt Vergie's "selective" participation in conversations at family gatherings. Rest assured that Aunt Vergie heard every word we said, even in her last days.
She is survived by her nieces, Marilyn Langston (Buddy) who was her caretaker, her Diet Coke supplier, and a fierce advocate for her care, Angie Sutherland (Christy), Pam Harpole (Mike) and Donna Piper; her nephews, Rodney Sutherland (Rhonda), Ronnie Sutherland (the late Jodie Sutherland), Dennis Sutherland (Debi), Doug Sutherland (Doylene), Lonnie Hutson(Carol) and Gary Hutson; her brothers-in-law, Bill Bales(Joann) and Jack Bales(Margie), many great nieces and nephews, and the many dedicated caregivers and friends of Pleasant Valley Manor and West Vue Nursing Center.
Vergie was preceded in death by her husband Donie; sisters Edith Sutherland, Gladys Hutson, Gloria Fuller(infant); her brother Kenneth Fuller; nephew Donald Hutson; and her mother and father.
