He was born in Northfork, WV, the son of Millard S. and Eva Hanley Barr.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp. and a POW. He was a retired engineer with Norfolk Southern Railroad.
He is survived by his twin daughters, Carolyn Barr of Greensboro, NC, Marilyn (David) Gillespie of Greensboro, NC. Grandchildren Suzanne (Chris) Liddell of Kalamazoo, MI, Michael Barr of Battle Creek, MI, Jason (Lindsay) Gillespie of Greensboro, NC, Meredith Gillespie of Greensboro, NC and Scott (Cathy) Fry of Roanoke, VA. He is also survived by his former daughter-in-law, Carol Ann Barr of Battle Creek, MI, nine great grandchildren and three nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Beavers Barr, his son, C. Dennis Barr, sisters Winnie Wyatt, Neva Clark, and Grace Fizer, two nieces and two nephews.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, Sarah Dorton, Sue Gillespie, Robin Hylton, Gay Wine and Barbara Atwell, who loved him and took such good care of him.
Memorial contributions may be made to Amedysis Hospice, 545 Airport Rd., Ste. 201, Bluefield, WV 24701, or Trinity United Methodist Church, 401 College Ave., Bluefield, WV.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 24, 11:00 a.m. at Mercer Funeral Home, 1231 West Cumberland Road, Bluefield, WV. The family will receive friends Saturday morning, 10:00 to 11.00 at Mercer Funeral Home. Due to COVID 19, please wear a mask and use social distancing.
Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery where military graveside rites will be provided by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard, and Masonic graveside rites will provided by Bluefield-Mercer Lodge #85 A.F. & A.M.
