NEWTON - Earl E. "Gene" Abbey, 72, died Tuesday Oct. 17, 2006, at his home, Newton.

He was born May 19, 1934, in Virgil, the son of Irl and Patra Abbey. A resident of Newton, formerly of Mount Hope, he was a lifelong pipeliner and current owner of Burrton Safety Services.

On Dec. 7, 1952, he married Sibyl Spain of Cunningham. She preceded him in death Nov. 9, 1994.

Survivors include: a son, Tim, Safety Harbor, Fla.; three daughters, Pam Stubby, Burrton, Sheryl Cooley and Patti McCaskill, both of Mount Hope; a sister, Bonnie Rupp, Pueblo, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by infant twins, Robert and Roberta of Amarillo, Texas, 1964; and three sisters, Lucille Klinginsmith, Louise Bischoff and Hazel Crowell.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Mount Hope, with Wayne Pittman presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Mount Hope Greeley Township Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Renal Care, Dialysis Center, Newton, in care of the mortuary.
