Obituary Tifton Topics, The Worth County Local Sept 18, 1896

"One of the saddest accidents that has occurred in this section for a long time was the killing of Hon. Elbert Fletcher, Sr., of Irwin county, on Wednesday afternoon of last week, by a mule running away and throwing him out of a wagon. What caused the mule to run is unknown, not even to Mr. George Congo who was sitting on the hind part of the wagon leading his horse. He jumped off the wagon as soon as the mule began to run and saved himself."
