Served in Company I, 9th Indiana Cavalry mustering in from Hendricks County, Indiana at Indianapolis with the rank of Pvt on 3 February 1864 at age 22 for a period of three years. He was paid a bounty of $60.00. He was identified at six feet, one inch in height with blue eyes, black hair and a light complexion. He furloughed sometime in March 1864, returning on 15 April 1864. He is also absent from his unit on 20 November 1864 and from 25 November 1864 through February 1865 while in Nashville and Gallatin, Tennessee due to illness. He mustered out at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 28 August 1865.
