HELEN C. MONAHAN
SUFFOLK - Helen Clay Monahan died peacefully at
Nansemond Pointe Nursing Home with her son by her
side on April 7, 2005. She was 96 years old and the
widow and devoted wife of the late Francis Marion
Monahan.
A native of Colerain, Bertie County, NC, she was the
daughter of the late George Clay and Allie Myers Clay
White. Mrs. Monahan, a registered nurse, was a
graduate of Lakeview Hospital and worked there and
later at the old Lakeview Clinic for 30 years before
retiring.
She is survived by a son, Frank M. Monahan of
Suffolk, two nieces, Judy H. Pierce and Sue Ellis
Laine; five nephews, Graham Harrell, Steve, Jerry,
Danny and Jimmy Johnson and their families.
Mrs. Monahan was preceded in death by two sisters,
Bertha C. Ellis and Gladys C. Harrell; a half sister,
Nell W. Johnson; and two brothers, George E. Clay and
Shelby H. Clay.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St.
Mary's Catholic Church, 202 S. Broad Street, Suffolk,
VA 23434 or to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, PO
Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 3
p.m. in the R.W. Baker & Co Funeral Home & Crematory
by Father Lou Ruoff with a private burial. The
family will receive friends in the funeral home
Saturday from 2 p.m. until the service time.
