She was born in Nashville, Georgia to C.C. and Eula Mae Nix. She was one of six children.
She and her husband, Robert Hendley, moved to Palatka and became owners of Palatka Bakery in 1978 which they ran until 1995.
Leta was an excellent cake decorator and made many beautiful cakes for weddings and other special occasions. She was also known for her “flakies” (a Danish pastry) and made many over the years to give to family and friends. She also enjoyed cooking and excelled in making pies, donut holes with cream cheese icing and with powdered sugar. She was a member of Palatka Baptist Temple.
She was a loving Christian wife and mother who was deeply devoted to her family and to helping others.
Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Ernest and Hubert; and a sister.
Surviving are a son, Robert “Buck” Hendley; a sister, Carolyn Shimek; three grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Eunice Hendley, Jay and Anna Hendley, and Robbie and Melissa Hendley; 11 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and 5 nieces and nephews.
The family will begin receiving friends 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14th at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Ed Wilds and Pastor Gary Martin officiating. The committal service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Memorial Park in Jacksonville.
