Harley "Mickey" Cullins

1928-2004

Funeral services for Harley "Mickey" Cullins, 76, of Sylacauga will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Curtis and Son North Chapel. The Revs. Pearl Jenkins and John Dye Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004.

Mr. Cullins died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Talladega County. As a lad he loved scouting. He had a paper route on South Broadway delivering papers to buy his first scout uniform. He attended B.B. Comer High School graduating in 1947 with the honor of 12 years perfect attendance. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at A&P Tea Company and then at Avondale Mills in raw materials purchasing where he retired with 38 years of service. His happiest times were with his family at their Lake Martin home. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening and cooking. He loved sharing fruits from his garden and recipes from his kitchen with family and friends. At the time of his death he was a member of Bay Pine Baptist Church. He loved his church family.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Hughes Cullins of Sylacauga; one daughter, Martha Gay Thurmond and husband Hal of Tuscaloosa; one son, John Daryl Cullins of Opelika; four grandchildren, Jonathan Brown Whitehurst of Bentonville, Ark., Rachel Nicole Whitehurst of Tuscaloosa, Jacob Marshall Cullins and Jared Nathaniel Cullins, both of Opelika; two sisters, Cloe Price Morris and Kay Mosely, both of Sylacauga and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Marshall Cullins and Bessie Lewis Cullins.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Armstrong, Ed Funderburke, Ricky Glassco, Herman Hussey, Howard Logan, Robbie Ludlum, Russell Robinson, George Shockley, Mark Whitehurst and Walter Jones.


In lieu of flowers, he requested donations be made to Bay Pine Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 267, Jackson's Gap, AL 36861 or Southern Care Hospice, 137 Franklin Street, Alexander City, AL 35010.

Curtis and Son North Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
