Carl Hayden Dossey was a nationally known rodeo figure. In 1940, he was named world champion bareback rider. He owned a ranch in Rock Springs, Arizona.

On 12 March 1955, he was riding in the annual Madison Square Garden Rodeo parade in Chandler, Arizona, when a team of runaway horses tore down the street.
