Silver Springs - Douglas Van Peebles, 95, passed away at Marion House on Feb. 25, 2009. Douglas was born on Oct. 15, 1913 at Conner, FL, the 6nd child of James Robert Peebles, Sr. and the 2nd child of Mary Ellinder Cox Peebles. Douglas attended East Marion School and enlisted in the Navy early on in WWII, serving most of the war in the North Atlantic. Following the war, he returned home where he worked until retirement as a heavy equipment operator for the U.S. Forest Services. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Wilkes and a special niece, Jackie Peebles. who helped her husband Jimmy, care for Douglas. Douglas was a wonderful caring person for the sick and a favorite uncle for his many nieces and nephews. He loved sports, hunting, fishing, family gatherings and most of all, he loved the Lord. He was a member of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by a nephew, Jimmy Peebles, who was more like a son and a niece, Betty Cheatom, who assisted Jimmy in the decisions of his care. Also he is survived by two brothers, Alton and Harold Peebles, both of Conner and a sister, Lonnice Blanchard of Ocala, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside service on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. at Ocklawaha Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Vaughn Foust officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Gideons international or Hospice of Marion County. Arrangements by HIERS-BAXLEY FUNERAL SERVICES, 910 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala.
