From The Griffin Daily News. Griffin, Georgia, Tuesday Morning, February 19, 1889:
Death of Miss Mary Hammond
Miss Mary W. Hammond died yesterday afternoon at few minutes after three o'clock, of pneumonia. Her last illness was only from Friday night but she had had several attacks of the dread disease previously from which her friends had too fondly hoped that she
had recovered. She was a devout member of St. George's church, and her last act was to partake of sacrament with her family and a few friends; she was one of the brightest ornaments of Griffin society - polished in mind and manner, with keen intellect and ready wit; more than all she was warm hearted and pure souled, and it is not too much to say that her death will be mourned by everyone with whom she ever came in contact. Yet she was ready and prepared for death, having known for a long time that she could not live long, and her passing away was as peaceful as the character of her disease would allow. God's finger touched her and she slept.

Miss Hammond was to have been a bridesmaid in a wedding to come off in two more days and will be buried in her bridesmaid's dress, and even now, while mourned by what would otherwise would have been that gay bridal party, stands with the Bridegroom whose coming the world awaits a little longer.

The body will be buried in Atlanta - the funeral notice will be found elsewhere.

Thank you to Katherine Hammond (48183123) for the above obituary.
