Obituary

Logan Republican, Sept. 10, 1953

Mrs Ida Atkinson

The relatives and many friends of Mrs Ida Atkinson were saddened last Thursday morning when she passed away at the home in the Cactus Community northwest of Logan since she and her husband moved there in 1906.
Mrs Ida Atkinson, daughter of John and Martha Kendall was born March 11, 1866; and departed September 3, 1953 at the age of 87. She was a pioneer in Kansas being born in Parkerville, Kansas and living in the state all of her life. She was united in marriage to Steven E. Atkinson on March 1, 1888 at Council Grove, Kansas and lived in that vicinity until 1906 when they moved to Norton County, where they resided in the Cactus community until the time of their passing. To this union were born 10 children all living except one daughter who passed away at the age of 5 days. Mrs Atkinson's husband preceded her in death on November 26, 1948.
Her sturdy, consistent faith in God carried her through the most trying experiences of a pioneer mother. Being converted at the age of 14, she lately elated her experience thus,"I knelt at the altar in our school house on Sunday morning, December 24, and in repentance received such a beautiful experience that it made the trees and hills seem so beautiful and everything seems to praise the Lord". She was baptized on Christmas day and for over 73 years maintained her faith and passed triumphant over all.
For 35 years she was deprived of her sight and suffered failing health. But through it all always had a cheerful disposition and a Christian interest in her family and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Cactus Church with Rev. W.G. Newel of Dodge City, delivering the funeral sermon. He was assisted by Rev. Dillon of Logan. Interment was in the Almena Cemetery. Pallbearers were Cecil Atkinson, Claude Archer, Myron Veh, Jack Archer, Nyland Archer, and Clyde Atkinson. A mixed quartet composed of Mrs Wayne Thomas, Kathleen Archer, Fred Dack and Ivan Dack presented the musical numbers accompanied by Mrs Dillon.
She leaves to mourn her passing 9 children, Atersia Ray, Densmore; Lester "Pat", Logan; Claude, Almena; Mary Veh, Norton; Gladys Archer, Almena; John, Florence, Colo; Roger, Pendleton, Oregon; Ethel Wilson, Delevan, Kans;and Jessie of the home who so wonderfully cared for her parents through their declining years. Also 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; one brother of Bethany, Okla; as well as many other relatives and friends.
