Judy Sasser Sharpton, age 65 of Vidalia, died peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2020, in Memorial Hospital in Savannah after a sudden illness. Mrs. Sharpton, a 1972 graduate of Vidalia High School and a graduate of the University of Georgia earning a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with a Minor in Art. She will be remembered for her thirty-two years of teaching fourth grade at Sally D. Meadows Elementary School, where she was beloved by students, faculty, administration, and the community. Mrs. Sharpton’s lifelong service to the community of Vidalia and her contributions to the students of Vidalia City Schools were immeasurable. After retirement, Mrs. Sharpton devoted her life to her grandchildren and was regularly seen in their classrooms, picking them up from school, and showering them with praise and adoration. Those who knew “GiGi,” as she would be named by her grandkids, will remember her wonderful sense of humor, infectious laugh, and impressive talent for art. She lit up the room and made everyone feel loved. Her loss to the Sharpton and Sasser families and the Vidalia community will leave a tremendous void, but her family and former students are sure to carry on her legacy.
