John Artz, a prominent banker, rancher, and farmer of Antler Township passed away at Bottineau Hospital at 1:30 AM on January 1st, 1931. He had been ill for quite some time, but the seriousness of his condition was not realized until the day before he died. He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon and died in the early hours Thursday morning of blood poisoning caused by an abcess.

He was born in Holland in 1875. When he was 8 years-old, he came to the United States and in 1902, he moved to Antler, ND where he resided until his death. In 1903, he married Marie Dirkes of Albany, MN. He is survived by eight children: Edna, Elizabeth, Genevieve, Gladys, Marguerite, Francis, Harold, and Aloysius. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by three brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Church. The church was so filled that many were forced to stand outside. It is estimated that over one thousand people came to pay tribute to him.
