US Congressman. Born in Ohio, he was a farmer in Jones County, Iowa when the Civil War began. He offered his services in 1862, and was commissioned Captain and commander of Company H, 31st Iowa Volunteer Infantry on October 13, 1862. His regiment fought in the Union's Army of the Tennessee, and participated in the Siege and Capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the Battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, Major General William T. Sherman's fight and capture of Atlanta, Georgia, and the March to the Sea, where General Sherman eventually captured Savannah, Georgia. Sewell S. Farwell was promoted to Major on May 27, 1865, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Soon after returning home in 1865 he was elected to the Iowa State Senate. In 1874 he was appointed as Collector of Internal Review for Iowa by President Ulysses S. Grant. He served in that role until 1880, when he was elected as a Republican to represent Iowa's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. He served a single term from 1881 to 1883, and was defeated for re-election by Democrat Congressman Jeremiah Henry Murphy. He later years were spent involved in banking and in the support and growth of Lenox College in Hopkintown, Iowa. He passed away in 1909.
