Joseph Price Hart was born in Franklin County, Indiana, January 19, 1823. He was one of 7 children born to Mary Carruthers Hart and Isaac Hart. Joseph Hart's parents were both born in Ireland and came to America in 1818 and were married a few years later. None of the family are now living, all having departed this life some years ago. In 1853 on May 1st, Joseph Hart was united in marriage to Mariah Louisa Knapp. To them were born 7 children; three of whom proceeded their father to the better world. Mrs Hart, beloved wife and 4 daughters, Mrs Laura A Rullman of Davis County; Mrs Martha E Snoddy, Bloomfield; Mrs Rosa L Benge, of near Floris, and Mrs Floretta Moughler of Seymour, survive their father. 9 Grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren live to bless the memory of their grandfather. In 1850 Mr Hart crossed the plain of the far west and followed the desolate trail marked only by the graves of those who had attempted to reach the gold fields of California before him.
