The Death Angel

Oh, life, thou art uncertain! Death, thou are sure! Another worthy citizen of Worth county has been claimed by Heaven, another quiet and loving family circle has been broken by the stroke of the death angel. Uncle John Crecelius of Allendale, Mo., departed this life March 12, 1897.

John G. Crecelius was born in Kentucky Nov. 7, 1817. While yet a small child he migrated, with his parents, to Crawford county, Ind., where he remained until 1852, at which time he emigrated to Ray county this state, remaining two years, after which time he came to this county making it his home until he was called to his reward.

In 1843 he was united in marriage with Nancy Seybold who remained his loving wife and constant companion until his death. She, with six children, four boys and two girls, survive him to mourn the loss of a loving, constant and true husband and father. One daughter awaits him on the other shore to clasp glad hands with him in the city of God.

About 52 years ago he confessed and obeyed his Master, uniting with the Christian church and remaining a faithful member until death. As well as a citizen he was a patriot, having offered his life on his country's altar in the late civil strife.

After reaching well into the twilight of natural life, and at the ripe old age of 79 years, 4 months and 5 days the sun of a well spent life sank peacefully to rest in the gathering shadows of the western horizon.

During his tenting here on this lowly earth he gathered many friends about him and many are the tears that will be shed at the news of his departure. As we view his life and behold the kind deeds and hear the loving words and see the great hope that anchored to that within the veil we are led to cry out "Oh death where is thy sting? Oh, grave, where is the victory?"

He has finished his work and his journey is over.
The war is accomplished the triumph begun
He laid down his armor beside the cold river,
And brilliant with stars is the crown that he won.
He has finished his work and his spirit rejoicing.
The voice of the King in his beauty has heard,
In accents of music, "Well done faithful servant
Now enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."
He has finished his work; shall we mourn our beloved one?
Or weep that his face we no longer behold?
Oh, sweet is our hope in this moment of anguish,
We'll meet him again in the city of God.

The funeral services took place from the Baptist church of Allendale, Mo., conducted by Rev. W.H. Harris of this city assisted by Rev. Mill of the Baptist church of Hopkins, after which the remains were laid in their final resting place in the Allendale cemetery. E.B.H.
