SPRING GROVE - Earl L. Wagner, 84, died peacefully at 8:58 p.m. on Monday, September 17, 2007, at the Lutheran Retirement Village at Utz Terrace in Hanover. He was the loving husband of Romaine E. (Kaltreider) Wagner, to whom he was married 65 years on May 6, 2007.
The funeral service will be held in thanksgiving for his life at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6 York St., Jefferson, with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Patricia A. Snyder, officiating. Viewing will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Irwin Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. He will be laid to rest in Jefferson Cemetery following the service, with a flag folding ceremony performed by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
Born October 9, 1922, in North Codorus Twp., Earl was one of eight sons born to the late Ralph L. and Anna K. (Brenneman) Wagner.
He retired in 1985 from the finishing department of P.H. Glatfelter Co. following 39 years of loyal employment. He was a member of the Mill Quarter Century Club.
Pfc. Wagner served his country with pride and valor in the Army from 1943-1945 with the 97th Division, Co. A, 322nd Engineer Combat Battalion in Europe. Earl was highly involved in service to his community and for twenty-one years served as a member and also president of the Spring Grove Borough Council and the Spring Grove Planning Commission. He was also a member of the Spring Grove Lion's Club. Earl was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Dedicated to community safety, Earl volunteered with the Spring Grove Friendship Hose Co. and Spring Grove Fire Police, the Spring Grove Ambulance Club, the Nashville Fire Co., the Reliance Fire Co. in West York, the Royal Fire Co. of York, the B.D. Club of York, and the York Co. Firefighters and Fire Police Associations.
He enjoyed the outdoors and for 50 years, he served as membership secretary for the Spring Grove Sportsman's Club and was a member of the Jefferson Rifle Club. Earl was also a member of the Spring Grove Area Historical Preservation Society, the Spring Grove Senior Citizens Group, the Western York County Democratic Club, and held life memberships with the Hanover Moose Lodge # 227 and the Viking Athletic Association in York, and the Jefferson Chapter # 3966 AARP. In 1947, Earl joined and was past commander of the Pvt. Allen J. Beck, Jr., Spring Grove Post # 5265 VFW. He was also past commander of the former Spring Grove American Legion Post # 216 and a current member of the American Legion Post # 14 in Hanover.
In addition to his wife, Romaine, Earl will be sadly missed by his son, Dennis L. Wagner and wife, Sandy of Spring Grove; his daughters, Irene A. Williams and fiance, Bill Shaffer of Dover, and Norma J. Anstine and husband, Don of York; six grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; and one brother, Stewart R. Wagner of York.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Charles, Daniel, Paul, Clyde, Robert, and Philip Wagner.
