Bert came to the US through Antwerp on September 15, 1912 and petitioned for citizenship on August 6, 1918. He was a seaman and a Master Mariner. Soon after he married Berthine on August 15, 1918 and they had a daughter Mabel in 1919. His wife passed away in 1924 and left with a small child, he married Dagmar Johanna (nee Wiik) Price. They had two additional daughters together, Lila and Lola.
