To Dr. John M. Hayes came the saddest dispensation of his life on October 15, 1896. On that day his precious wife, Sarah Jane Hayes, quietly fell to sleep. She was the daughter of Hon. James E. and Mrs. Mary Frances Saunders. She was born and married at old Rocky Hill, near Courtland, Ala., an died and was buried at the same place. She was born Nov. 29, 1836, and was baptized by Rev. James McFerrin at Mountain Spring camp ground, some two or three miles from where she was born. She was married to Dr. Hayes August 5, 1868, the great and good Bishop H.N. McTyeire officiating. She was an elegant and refined woman, intelligent and discriminating in her literary tastes, and an engaging conversationalist. She was scrupulous in the fulfillment of all her promises and engagements. She was devoted to her husband and kindred, and kind and generous in all her attachments. She was a woman of grace and goodness, and was pious and diligent in Christian work. She was an active member of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society where she had her church membership. Retaining all her faculties to the very last, she met death quietly, maintaining her care for the comfort and happiness of the loved ones about her to her final moment.
