David's youngest son was born in 1849, so David was still living in 1848-49. His wife, Elzira was head of household in the 1850 census.

Five unrelated men who were traveling overland to California or Utah in 1849 mention in their diaries seeing the grave of a "David Amick." They report he died in 1849 before June 27. Two state the grave was on the South Platte River and one reports that it was on the south bank of the South Platte about 1 mile west of O'Fallons Bluff. This is immediately south of what is now Sutherland, Nebraska. Three state that he died of cholera and that he was 35 years old. Three report that he was from Missouri and one that his home was in Morgan County.

There is a "funeral home" temporary marker for David in Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Levick Mill, Missouri.
