COUSIN KILLED. Harry Dillard Accidentally Shoots James Weisbach. James Weisbach, the ten years old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Weisbach, was accidentally shot and killed about 7:30 o'clock last night by his cousin, Harry Dillard, twenty-two years old, and Mrs. Weisbach was also struck in the arm by some of the shot. The shooting occurred at the home of Dillard and Weisbach at 830 Pearl street. Mrs. Weisbach and her son lived at the home of James Dillard, who is a brother of Mrs. Weisbach and uncle of Harry Dillard. Last evening young Weisbach and Harry Dillard were engaged in smoking caterpillars out of a tree in their yard and a bat began circling around their heads. A suggestion was made that an effort be made to kill the bat and Dillard went into the house and secured a shotgun. The yard in the rear of the home makes a sharp descent and Mrs. Weisbach and her son were standing near the back end, Mrs. Weisbach having her arm around her son. When Dillard returned from the house with the shotgun he started to raise it and slipped just as it was pointed toward the bottom of the incline. His finger was on the trigger and his sudden slip caused the weapon to be discharged. The load of shot struck young Weisbach in the breast and tore a gaping wound from which the blood poured in a torrent. He sank to the ground and expired in a few minutes. Dillard, horrified over the terrible accident, ran to the office of Dr. Easley and as quickly as possible Drs. Cook, Easley and Starr hurried to the Dillard home, but young Weisbach was dead before they reached the house. Mrs. Weisbach's wounded arm was dressed by the physicians. She is prostrated today, more from the death of her child than from her own wounds, which are not serious. Dillard is a son of William Dillard, who was an engineer on the Monon road and was killed in a wreck a number of years ago. The funeral of Weisbach will take place from the residence tomorrow. Coroner Starr held an inquest and will return a verdict of accidentally killing. - New Albany Evening Tribune 05 Jul 1906
