Dale E. Hayes, 77, of Iowa City, died on Monday, June 18, 2018, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City, ending his battle with cancer.


Dale was born in Waverly, Iowa on November 26, 1940, the son of Charles and Iota Hayes. His siblings included three sisters, Jeanie of Reinbeck, Jackie of Waterloo, and Judy of Waterloo; Jeanie and Jackie preceded Dale in death.


He served his country in the US Army from October of 1963 to December of 1965. In July of 1964, he married Donna Hayes of Mason City, Iowa. Dale and Donna had two children, Dale (Norma) Hayes of Dayton, Indiana, and Tina Mulzac of Waterloo, Iowa. Dale's family also includes four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Dale enjoyed his time with family and friends, camping, and racing. In 1972, Dale's son, Dale Jr. raced quarter midgets. Dale moved from Waterloo to Coralville, and eventually to Iowa City in 2005. He made many friends in the area and will be missed by all who knew him.
